So, it’s Day 5 (why do I count days…?) of 10 to be spent in AD before I head back to the States for the summer. I feared being a little bit bored since almost all of my friends have fled the country and my BF will be gone until this weekend. Though I had planned to get research work done to “entertain” myself that seems to be delayed.

Therefore, I’ve had to keep busy…

My first order of business was to clean up, redecorate and organize my apartment as it has been greatly neglected. I’m still in a bit of unsurety regarding putting things on the walls or painting, so I’m making-do with small make-overs to the living room and bathrooms until I can make up my mind.

The next order of business has been to relax and get back into an exercise routine. So, I took a day treating myself to a Spa treatment at Eden Spa in the Le Meridien hotel where I use the gym/pool. I’ve also been running a bit more and yesterday I spent all day at the poolside with a workout during the hottest hours. πŸ˜€

Finally, I’m catching up with friends, emails, my website and going out a tiny bit. So, it’s been good so far. I can’t wait for the BF to get back and am TOTALLY excited to get myself on the airplanes again. πŸ™‚

Until next time,

Our last day in Sri Lanka was spent trying not to get too car sick as we wound our way down the mountain with a few stops for photo shoots, at record-speeds and trying not to have a heart attack watching as Anton swerved in and out of lanes passing trucks and cars on a barely-callable two-lane road.

Still, we had a few highlights, such as the stop at Sifani’s again to pick up my jewelry. The photos I’ve taken do not do the jewelry true justice, but you can get the idea. The plan was to get in and get out. C jinxed it when we walked in and said, “I’m not going to buy anything…”! haha. As they were putting the final touches (lengthening the chain on the necklace) to my pieces, I wandered again – definitely NOT thinking to buy anything.

But, the truth was that I had been thinking about the blue sapphire. I mean, it would be a shame to be in Sri Lanka and to go home without one having bought other semi-precious stone items. Still, I wasn’t sure. I again looked at rings – why am I fascinated with rings???? I found a simple oval-shaped one that looked interesting, but I wasn’t totally in love with it. Then, the salesman brought me a new Sifani-designed setting with a light sapphire in it. I just didn’t like the stone as much since the darker (medium) blue was much better to my eye. At one point I had four different rings I was looking at. One was a princess-cut (square) medium blue sapphire with a nicely cut setting. Everyone said it was a unique cut and I could get it for a good price…. What to do????

Plus, they threw in an extra ring for free – so I chose a green stone…. πŸ˜€

So, all my jewelry for LIFE is taken care of…well, now I’m contemplating a few more pieces to my collection, but simple simple is the theme. hahahahahah.

Anyway, we AGAIN took longer than expected (even C ended up with more jewelry…), but still arrived at the airport with a few hours to kill. Thankfully, the airport was small and no major temptations were to be found there aside from a few touristy/gifts to be purchased. Phew.

In sum up, the trip was great. C was an awesome traveling companion – good for laughs, chats and shopping. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country, though they’ve got a bit of work to do to truly be a desired tourist destination. Starting with NOT asking the following question-statements:
1. You are from?
2. You look Asian…?
3. First time in Sri Lanka?
4. How long staying – 1 week/2weeks?
5. How is Sri Lanka?

True, they are being curious, friendly, etc. and I know I am a rather sensitive person to questions like this, but still it got a wee bit tiring after four full days of it.

Still, I would return to see the beaches as I’ve heard they are amazing. So, ends my brief trip to Sri Lanka!

More to come with summer travels…

Our schedule was a bit lighter for this day, so we started a little later for our trip up the mountains to Nuwara Eliya.

We started with finishing our visit in Kandy by heading to the Holy Tooth Temple located near/on the palace grounds of the last Singhalese king. It also happened to be a national holiday, so there were numerous visitors to the temple – lucky us! The temple was interesting though with the inside holding a very Chinese-style temple, but then combining Hindu/Buddhist decor and methods. It was quite an experience, but somehow not as disturbing to me as some of my trips to Japanese temples.

From there we stopped at the botanical garden, which was lovely. Sadly my camera battery died in the temple, so I was left to take photos with my iPhone, which did a decent job, but wasn’t the same. It didn’t seem to be high flowering season, but it was nice to see so much lush green, trees and some blooming flowers. πŸ™‚

We continued on, but stopped briefly at a silk shop. They were very eager to sell us something, but neither of us were much in the mood for silk products. Unfortunately, they were a bit too keen for me and immediately caused me to put up a wall – besides the fact that I’m a very slow shopper! So, we didn’t buy anything and why go to Sri Lanka to buy silk, I mean really?

Our drive up to the Bluefield Tea plantation was a climb passing numerous tea fields and factories. The view of the valley and mountains was spectacular, but it got cloudy in mid-afternoon and since my camera was dead we had to wait to take photos. Still, our visit to the plantation was quite interesting. Families are paid a minimal salary to pick tea leaves, though they are provided with housing and transportation. The factory puts out about 1 ton of tea a day and the pickers must meet a 20kg quota per day. The process for drying and packaging the tea leaves seemed quite simple, but it is the second-largest export for the country, so I imagine it requires much more than we saw. I hadn’t realized that most Lipton or commercial black teas are just packaged Sri Lankan tea!

We, of course, bought tea. Also, I had been wanting some good green tea for a while, so I bought some of theirs after a taste test and deciding it was almost as good as the tea I might find in Japan. πŸ˜‰

Our night was spent at a mountain-high old-style British hotel called St. Andrew’s. It reminded me a bit of British Hills in Japan, though not nearly as traditional or conservative in maintaining “tradition”. Our room was cute with a space heater, which was actually needed! Thus ends our last night in Sri Lanka. One more day….
