_Now You See Her_ by James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge

While I was hesitant to read another Patterson book so soon after my last one, I was looking for a quick read for the plane rides on my way back home. This one was a quick read, which I finished in one day due to a sleepless night before my second day of traveling.

The main character runs from her past in Florida and creates a new life for herself in New York City. The story explains her past and then the present brings her back to having to face the past she had tried to ignore. In general it was a pretty cookie-cutter storyline, but the twists and turns were interesting enough to keep me quite engaged.

I was glad I did read another Patterson book as they are definitely quite good for traveling! 😀

The Plague by Albert Camus

_The Plague_ by Albert Camus

Albert Camus (pronounced ca-moo and not cay-mus as I would like to say it) is an interesting author from Algeria. He wrote _The Stranger_ (published 1946), which I read quite a few years ago after my college friends gave it to me as a gift. I hadn’t heard of him before, but I remember enjoying the book, though I can’t currently recall the story.

When I came across _The Plague_ in one of my searches for books, I thought I would give it a go since it is also considered a classic (I think).

The story follows characters in the town of Oran, which is affected by a strand of the plague. The main characters were men, which was interesting as the women were either mentally unstable (Rieux’s wife) or motherly (Rieux’s motherly) or idealistic (Rambert’s wife and Grand’s main character of his novel). While the men are of varied backgrounds and different personalities, they are forced together by the quarantine of the plague.

Overall, I liked the read and enjoyed the style of Camus’s writing. The portrayal of females is rather typical of the time in which he wrote, so I can forgive that. 😉

Well, our last day was spent relaxing with final massages, errands, etc. Overall, we had a really lovely time in Bali and were sad to see the time come to an end. The return journey took us back to Jakarta on our way to Bangkok. I headed back to Abu Dhabi from there.

Hardly worth posting for today, but a little something is better than nothing they say in the blogging world… 😀

The best part of the day was getting massages – about USD6 for an hour – at the first place we went to when we arrived. They were the best. After that was dinner at our Chinese food haunt (surprisingly no food photos this time!) and dessert at:

Time is going so quickly now. It’s another Friday in Bali and just a few more days left before we leave…. We just relaxed most of the day and then went in for some pampering.

R did some ear candling to take the wax out of his ear. It was weird to see it happening!

Today was Marine Water Sports Day! It was a blast!!

We had transport pick us up at 11am and then it was a 40-minute drive to the Nusa Dua area. Originally, we had considered staying at a resort in this area and then getting a scooter to visit the main beaches here in Bali. However, it seemed like it would be too far and boy was that estimate right. Not only is it way too much traffic for a scooter, it is also pretty far. Plus, all the Asian peeps seem to stay in the Nusa Dua area since that is where the nicer resorts are located. There was one main street, which seemed nice, but for the amount of time we spent here, we would have gone stir crazy!

In any case, we had a ton of fun with the water sports.

Another day for the beach! It was pretty toasty out so we didn’t stay too long, but had some fun swimming in the waves. I wasn’t quite as brave as R in diving into the waves since they were pretty big and scary to me. However, it would have been a lot of fun to try surfing or just boogie-boarding. 🙂

Wow, a full two weeks of being in Bali has already passed. Just another week before it is a return to reality… 🙁 Let’s not think about that!

We wanted to try out rafting in Bali since we had such a fun time in Oregon last summer. When we first arrived, we talked to a guy about two different locations for the rafting. He explained that one was close-by but with class 1 and 2 size rapids and a very small river. He said we wanted to go to the one that was a bit further away, but a much better rafting experience. We waited to book and decided to book online, but didn’t check which trip we were booked on.

The day started out with grey skies, which should have been a clue as to how things would go…. It was an early rise for us – up at 8.30 and in the lobby by 9….

We took about an hour car-ride into the countryside and ended up at Bakas Elephant Tour company. There was rain when we first got there, but it had stopped by the time we had donned our lifejackets, helmets and paddle ready to go!

You can see from the pics that the river was quite narrow and the rapids were fun, but little. We were in basically a two person raft with two “guides” who were basically amateurs. I think I probably had as much or even more experience in a rafting boat as them…. One guy was a bit too “guidey” in his splashing, ooohing and aaahing, etc. R didn’t like it at all and I just smiled it off knowing that it was part of the experience although annoying.

Despite the cloudy day and lame guides, we had some fun. However, if you want a better experience than ours, confirm to which river you are going!
