Although I should not complain about getting good help when the Western world sees it as a luxury, in this part of the world, it’s a way of life. With both of us studying and working full-time, one area that gets lost is a regular and thorough cleaning. Since most people hire housekeepers/nannies/maids, who are we to say no? πŸ˜‰

When we moved to the new apartment, there were advertisements for a new company and so we tested them out and signed contracts for bi-weekly cleaning. Initially, an older Russian woman was the main contact. At some point, a younger one – presumably her daughter – became in charge. She’s a nice lady and all, but clearly this is her first professional experience, and understanding service might be something she’ll learn over time.

About a month ago, we waited for the cleaners to arrive and no one came. When I called to find out what happened, she claimed that someone had come the week before according to her calendar and so they weren’t scheduled to come that day. I tried to explain to her that wasn’t the case and that she had an error in her calendar. With no apology and with attitude, she agreed to reschedule. I took it as a one-off.

Last week, I rescheduled for later in the week since I planned to be around. Yesterday, I waited and waited. The time came and went. After 30 minutes I called to find out what the deal was… They were on holiday and someone (the young lady) was supposed to have called me the day before. Of course, she ‘forgot’.

When she called, she insincerely apologized and asked when to reschedule. I explained how this was the second incident and that I had spent my entire day waiting for them. While it may have been convenient for her to forget to notify me, it was not convenient for me as it was a waste of my day. I also explained that I was not going to reschedule another one of my days and that I wanted the cleaners tomorrow morning (today – now) or I wanted to cancel my contract with her.

She suddenly was very apologetic and accommodating. Although she had said no options were available before 1pm prior to my explanation, now there was an 8am option. Amazing! (note sarcasm) So, they are here as I write this. I still had to adjust my time to get up early for them, but it’s better than wasting my day.

It’s amazing to me how poor customer service can be at times here. I know I have been spoiled by Japan, but there are just common sense ways of doing business. Make the customer happy! Also, when you have a customer with a contract, they should get some kind of priority over those who do not…. Is it really so difficult?

Rant over.

Only got about five hours of sleep last night. I’m not sure why… I did go to bed around 2am, but thought I would sleep in….

Anyway, yesterday was a fairly good day, though not necessarily study-productive. I did get quite a bit of reading done, but it’s taking me longer to get through some books than I had hoped. I guess I just have high expectations… πŸ˜›

I headed out of the apartment around 2ish and went to a Thai massage appointment near school. Wow, was that totally worth the Groupon that I bought for it! 90mins just flew by and I felt so good. Too bad that relaxed feeling doesn’t last longer…. I headed out to Ikea afterwards since I was over halfway there already.

It’s so easy to get distracted there and to waste hours! I had a list even and still got distracted from that. However, I did manage to buy a few of the listed items.

After Ikea, I headed back to have dinner with some CSers who are surfing my apartment. We went to the Lebanese Flower and had a lovely conversation. I’m always amazed when I meet people who are intelligent and thoughtful. I shouldn’t be as there are many such people out there – guess I just don’t get out much. πŸ˜€

Although I got back late, I didn’t feel like doing much, so I put together the Ikea stuff and then watched some TV before bed.

All-in-all a good day was had.

So far today, I have done a 6k run and had a swim. I marked 2 essay drafts and have prepared the apartment for the cleaners who are coming later. Once I finish a couple more emails, then I will read/study until the cleaners arrive even though I’d really like to take a nap right now…. Maybe later.

This is just a small view of the things I have planned to get through this week. πŸ˜€

I managed to accomplish in small doses everything on my list yesterday, though not necessarily as much as I had hoped for one day. Still, it is holiday and as long as I get bits done each day, I can feel content that the days aren’t being wasted.

Today, I woke up pretty refreshed after a straight 7.5 hour sleep. It’s amazing how having a whole bed to yourself can feel so good! I do miss the warm body, but I admit it’s nice to spread out.

Once I was awake, I headed up to the pool for a swim, marked a couple more essay drafts, did some reading and have been a bit distracted for the last hour and a half doing other things on the computer. However, none of it could be called a waste since booking spa treatments and ordering Christmas cards isn’t a waste, right?!

Anyway, it’s off for another cup of coffee and more reading before I head out for a wee massage and maybe catching up with my girlfriend this evening. I’ve decided my main goal this week is to do a bunch of reading rather than finish analyzing and preparing for a presentation since that isn’t due until March and I can focus on it more easily while I’m working, whereas reading is less attractive when I’m tired after a long day at work. So, that helps take a small load off my self-inflicted worrying. πŸ˜€

More tomorrow –

It dawned on me this morning that this is perhaps the first time in three years that I have stayed put during a holiday. It’s a little weird. Also, I haven’t been on my own for a while, so I have to admit that I’m quite a bit excited about the week. πŸ™‚

After dropping off R at the airport this morning, I had a short run and then a swim and an hour or so laying by the pool. I even marked/read a couple of essay drafts that I have to grade over the week. Once back in the apartment, I had to do a little organizing to put things just right – as I like them – since it’s all about ME this week and I can things HOWEVER I want and WHENEVER I want. uwahahah! (Note – things are at all bad normally, I just have to share and this week I don’t. :D)

Anyway, I do have a long, long list of things to get done. True to my crazy organized ways, I have made a list of things to do each day so that I don’t feel overwhelmed with everything and also so that I focus my energies. So far, I’m a little slow on getting started, but not yet in need of fretting. It is only the first day of vacation, after all. I deserve a little slack!

The weather is absolutely gorgeous! I’ve opened up all the doors and windows as well so for the first time since we moved here, I am not cold inside!

Well, that’s it for now. The rest of my day will entail:

– a snack
– a wee nap
– catching up with my BFF
– work/study
– preparing the beds for coming CSers this evening
– reading (not pleasure books, sadly)
– crocheting and watching TV

If I feel adventurous, I may go out later this evening. But, I think today might just be a stay at home kind of day! πŸ˜€

While I am trying to recover from midterm hell, we got some more fantastic news today at work.

Our vacation went from being a week long to just two workdays. WTF? Normally, I would just roll with the punches, but after the last two days and with more marking coming up tomorrow due to the incompetency of the program system, I am just not happy with these sudden decisions that again make my life more difficult!

Anyway, it is some comfort that it is country-wide and that life is just this way. However, I might need to whinge a little bit more before I can get over it. πŸ˜›

Okay, seriously, I thought it was bad when we had to double-mark 25 essays at the end of term. When I decided to do this new semester course, I figured that it would be an okay trade-off to have to teach instead of all the marking….

Then, mid-term exams were formulated – okay, I can handle that since I hadn’t seen them yet.

Then, a challenge exam for students who want to try to test out of the new semester system was created – nice for the students, though a bit ad hoc in the decision-making; still manageable.

THEN, mid-terms were given and we discovered that we had to mark and bubble in write-in answers for about 20 questions, plus have them double-marked! This means we had to look at about 50 tests each for three exams, plus a separate grading for the free-writing. One of the benefits of our level is that the students only have to produce 10 sentences…marking is fast… or WAS!

So, we started yesterday for three hours. We re-convened this morning at 9. I had a 30-minute lunch break. Then, went again until 4.30. Got home and had to input grades for another 20 minutes. Waiting for another set of grades.

Have to be at work again at 7.30am for the 8am class, but may have to input grades before then….

Can’t wait for holidays to begin!
