…did you know that sometimes as I smile I am imagining smashing your face against a wall?

Or, that every time I see a particular student I smile as I imagine pummeling his face into a bloody pulp for the torture he and his fellow classmates put me through?

Or, that when I say ‘Hi, how’s it going?’ I really want to say ‘You’re a pathetic fool and I despise you?’.

Or, that I have no respect for you whatsoever even though I pretend to listen to your simple stories?

Is this really true about me, you may be asking yourself…?

No…but what if it were and someone really thought these things about you? Would you be sad, scared or worried at all?

I’ll attempt to keep this all theoretical and as objective as possible, but it may be hard.

One of the reasons that I started doing my dissertation on the topic of leadership development and training is because of working with so many leaders or people who want to leaders who don’t have the basics in leadership skills. Of course, there’s the argument of is a leader born or made? There’s also a discussion on whether anyone can be a leader or not. Most importantly, there’s a divide between management and leadership. This distinction is often confused and blurred, but there is a distinction.

Not all managers are good leaders. Not all leaders are good managers. One who can do both is a diamond in the rough and rare. Most people assume that if they are good managers (ie can organize schedules, run meetings, make photocopies, etc.), then they are effective leaders. However, I would guess that most who are good leaders do not necessarily care about being a good manager (unless they are the diamond).

Leadership is as the name suggests, about leading. Leading means modeling professional behavior (in a work environment), initiating new ideas grounded in sound theory and pedagogy (in the world of education) and being a person who inspires. Of course, some may argue these characteristics, but let’s just let me have my way for the time being.

So, a leader should be proactive, not reactive nor deactive (which is not a real word in this form, but serves its purpose for now…). However, how often do you see people in managerial/leadership positions who undertake the latter behavioral patterns rather than the former? When people are proactive it creates an environment of activity and positiveness. The others contribute to a negative environment based on fear and subjugation. In our heart of hearts, we all know that we would rather be and work in a proactive environment and yet it is so amazingly rare to find one in reality. WHY?

In any case, you can come to your own conclusions about who or what I am referencing here. However, if you are a leader or want to be one, please take a moment to step back and really asses what kind of environment you are working in and what can you do make it more proactive!

Time is flying by and I have gotten out of my habit of writing regularly – either here or anywhere.

Here’s what’s been going on:

*I’m taking an online course through tesol.org called “Training Trainers”, which has been pretty good so far, though keeping me extra busy. The good thing about taking these courses are the contact I make, plus it keeps my head fresh towards working on the PhD.

*Speaking of PhD, I’m behind…as usual. This weekend, my plan is to send out emails to set up my interview schedule for Phase II of my data collection. Once that is done, I can spend the summer analysing and writing up stuff – on my way to being closer to DONE!

*Work, work, work…I’m in a bit of a quandary as to how much is acceptable to write on a public forum like this because you just never know who is lurking…. At the moment, I’m keeping mum and doing the job, but there’s so much I’d like to say…!

*Trying to enjoy the weather as it starts to heat up fast around here. It’s been in the 40’s (over 100F) the past week and it’s getting hotter each day. Still, we are trying to enjoy the beach on the weekends and I’m taking more advantage of the pool and stuff when I can. 😀

That’s about it at the moment. There’s lots going on in my brain and much I would like to write, but I think most of that is going to have to wait another month or so until summer holidays are here. I will try to write more regularly again, but no promises!
