The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

_The Pillars of the Earth_ by Ken Follett

This is a book I have heard a lot about and an author who has gotten a lot of attention, yet I have never really paid any attention to either one. However, when a friend at work read another book by him (don’t remember the title), I thought I would try this one since I had heard it mentioned many times.

Usually I try to know what the book is about before I start to read, but in this case I merely went off of title, name and fame. πŸ˜‰

It was written in historical fiction style with elements of a fantasy novel, but not fantastical in any way. I suppose one might say it is set in medieval times or at least early medieval times when religion, kings, knights and small villages were the norm.

The story revolves around the characters of Prior Phillip, Tom Builder and his family – Alfred, Jack, Ellen, Martha -, Aliena and her brother Richard, and Bishop Waleran Bigod. The names are interesting as they relate to the characters with common names in today’s world and ones that are representative of the character’s personality.

As is common in many contemporary stories, there are a lot of overlapping incidences and what one might call coincidences of events in the lives of the characters that bring them together. Their world is indeed small, so feasible in reality, yet also dramatized for the sake of the story.

Overall, it was an entertaining read and definitely not one I probably would have chosen had I paid attention to the content. So, it was a good new kind of novel for me and I will consider future Follett books later. πŸ™‚ Most interestingly is that there is a mini series of this novel and as I was reading it, I kept thinking – this would make a good movie or TV drama…. So, I will be looking for it to watch later as well!

In my family, we used to always celebrate the 4th by having a large family picnic or BBQ. I am not always here during this time of year, but since I was home, it was nice to bring some tradition back.

We had a potluck and shared some tasty beverages whilst briefly catching up. Although we do not see each other as much as we used to, with age it seems to get more memorable and enjoyable to all get together. Sadly, I do not really know, nor do they know me, the children of my cousins, but family is family. πŸ˜‰

There has been a lot of talk about paraben-free products for a while and generally I have not paid a lot of attention to it as I have sensitive skin and most of the time avoid overly chemically products. However, I did not realize that parabens are everywhere and that sulphates are just as bad. For me, I have always avoided high alcohol products or those free of fragrance and dyes. Little did I know how hard it would be to also find totally organic and natural products.

Living in the UAE makes it nearly impossible to find ‘health’ products let alone chemically free items. Since I was coming home this year, I decided to make a giant leap and try to switch myself to what I could find.

So far, I have tried new shampoo, conditioner and face wash by Alba Botanica. While it does not say on the website that it is a Hawaiian-based company, the products show them as Hawaiian…. All the more reason to love them. πŸ˜‰ In any case, I have really liked the products so far and the best part is that you can find their products in Fred Meyers, Whole Foods, Safeways or Walmarts. This shows it is not necessarily a specialty item that one has to pay a fortune for.

Before I found the Alba Botanica products, I had read a lot about Dr Bronner‘s products. I first came across this name when I was looking for how to make organic toothpaste. So, when I got home, I ordered a few items to try out while I am here and then could possibly get it delivered to AD when I go back. The items arrived today and I have not yet tried them, but will give it a go this week to see how I like them. So far, from the use of just the lotion I can say that I’m a bit unsure since the lavender smell is quite strong and not necessarily something I want to smell all day long. However, I will see. Truthfully, though, if I can get Alba Botanica just as easily….

Moving on from bath products, I started to consider make-up. When I first started wearing make-up as a teen, I used Clinique, which seems to be many young ladies’ first brand. As time passed, I switched to MAC because it is quite popular and I generally haven’t worn a lot of make-up, so when I did I wanted a brand that was well-known and consistent. Overall, I have been happy with MAC. However, a while ago a friend mentioned that they do test on animals and that, in fact, they are not all that natural. So, I considered a change and perhaps finding a brand that was a bit cheaper and more matching to me (ie not trendy!).

So, I started to search organic, paraben-free, etc. make-up products. Some common names came up, such as Bare Escentuals (Bare Minerals), Kiehls (some products), Korres, Tarte, Nars, etc. Many of these products are found in Sephora, which I have come to love lately and know that I can find in AD. Thus, the other day I ventured out with the intent of changing my entire make-up line. While I had initially thought I could do the Bare Minerals products since it seemed to be more highly advertised, when I arrived at the store, the lady helping me showed me Tarte, Korres and another brand as the Sephora-approved organic/natural names.

Therefore, I ended up with my second interest – Tarte – since most of their products use Amazonian clay, which just sounds cool. πŸ˜‰

As I was getting the make-up, I began to look at face moisturizers as it is hard for me to find brands that I really like or that do not cause my face to become even oilier than it already is…. My good friend in AD had introduced me to the Greek brand, Korres, which is on the natural list. Their make-up line was a bit more limited, but they do have a nice line of bath and body products. So, I decided to use them for my face lotions and it has been a good choice so far!

This ends my post on transitioning to more natural products for my body. I hope that it will be a good and wise choice in the long run. The happiest part is that really the products have not been outrageously expensive as they have been in the past. So, I’m quite happy that the natural trend is catching on and that it’s not a bad trend I am joining. πŸ˜‰

It is nice to be ‘home’ with my family. It is strange for us all to be more or less living under the same roof again after so many years, but somehow it seems to be working out okay.

The weather has been amazingly beautiful after a first couple of clouds and drizzle. I’m sitting outside feeling a cool breeze and the warm 85 degree (higher?) sun on me as I attempt to get some work done.

So far, this time being home has not quite given me the down feeling that I often get from my childhood surroundings. Perhaps it is the Cipralex working or perhaps I am just more comfortable in my skin or perhaps it is a combination of everything. I am even enjoying the friendliness and ‘normalcy’ of the people and life here. Of course, I do not have to go to work or deal with the daily grind, which helps me to enjoy the life.

Despite all this, I still feel a little out of place. It seems to me that Americans talk a lot. I mean talk – about everything and anything. I am no longer used to this kind of social interaction as I hardly talk to anyone, let alone people I do not know at all. I have never been an overly talkative person to begin with, but it is rather interesting to me that people will tell me all kinds of stories and the real truth is that while I am politely listening, I am also wondering why they are telling me the information. Is it just to fill unfamiliar silence? Is it to make some connection to me? Is it to try to get me to share more information – quid pro quo style? Or, is it simply just the need for verbal diarrhea with no purpose other than to expunge energy and information?

I understand it is ‘friendly’ and ‘just what people do’, but it is taking some adjusting. I live in my head most of the time. I am generally surrounded by like-minded people by choice and so it is somewhat uncomfortable to be around people I have not necessarily chosen to spend my time with let alone have a fairly in-depth conversation with. πŸ˜‰

In any case, it is still nice to be here. It is good to be reminded that there is a normal world out there still (meaning one I am more familiar with and consider to be civilized!). I sometimes forget that the world I am in most of the time is not really the ‘norm.’

Earlier this year, I had some allergy tests done via blood in Abu Dhabi. The results showed I am allergic to most of the things I had expected and a few surprises. However, I was not totally satisfied with just the blood tests.

So, my mom made an appointment for me at a local allergist and I got a lot more information from him.

Basically, I am highly sensitive to a number of things on my skin and many outdoor histamines. Due to some of my outdoor allergies, I may be allergic or become allergic to a number of food items that come from the trees or plants that I have allergies to. However, this does not mean that I have to avoid eating everything, but to be more aware of what I eat and how I react.

To give some peace of mind in case I do eat something my body doesn’t like, I was given an epipen to carry around for emergencies.

Also, I am taking more allergy meds than I’m used to, which I believe is causing me to be sleepier than I usually am. So, I have to adjust the timing of when I take the meds since going to sleep before 10pm and waking up around 4am is not quite ideal. πŸ˜‰

Anyway, it is good to have a little more knowledge about my crazy body chemistry.

Well, a new month brings me back to trying to write more consistently. I am not sure what happened to June, but in any case, I am going to try to keep to a writing schedule since I am on summer break. πŸ˜‰

I have been home with my family for about a week now. It has been pretty good and relaxing so far. I have not really done too much other than sleep and watch a lot of TV. The weather has heated up for me as well, which makes me happy to not be freezing as I usually am even in the summer.

My 37th birthday came and went. It was another quiet one, but that is a good thing for me.

I also finally got to meet Diane again after all these years. There were some memories of the area, but mostly it was just nice to put another piece of my puzzled life together. πŸ™‚

So, that’s all I’ve got for now, but will try to do more later.
