When I first started listening to podcasts, I went back and forth between Serial and this one. PaleOMG Uncensored had not yet started, so this was the main podcast that I got information about health, diet, etc.

Recently, I have not been listening to it as much for no real reason other than I am addicted to true crime podcasts or more specifically, My Favorite Murder

What I really enjoyed about this podcast is the medical or researched information provided to support their claims for eating healthy. Even though the focus is on a Paleo diet, the real belief of the hosts and their guests is having a realistic and healthy diet for our bodies. They teach the importance of reading labels, not buying into ‘organic’ or ‘gluten free’ stickers and truly getting to know what our bodies want/need to have the most energy and feel healthiest. Also, their own product line at Paleovalley.com sounds amazing – just wished I lived somewhere where I could take advantage of it better.

It may not be a podcast for everyone as it can be rather ‘dry’ in content or the enthusiasm of Autumn might be too much for some, but it made my long drives to yoga weekends go by much faster. Once I get my fill of true crime, I will definitely come back to more regular following of this podcast. πŸ˜€

I am not quite sure how I came across this blogger, maybe when I first started Paleo and was looking for recipes, or maybe on Instagram. Who knows, but I love Julie Bauer and her blog Paleomg.com. Some might consider me a bit of a stalker as I follow her on every social media platform including Snapchat. I just find her refreshingly hilarious and straightforward.

So, as I follow her blog, it only made sense that I would also start to listen to her podcasts, which she has only just started – PaleOMG Uncensored.

It is called uncensored for a reason. She curses, she talks about all subjects freely, and the warning is in the title even though she often speaks about people complaining about her language or topics on occasion.

In any case, PaleOMG brings me laughs while I am driving or interesting thoughts about living healthy, eating well, working out or just enjoying life.Β I think Bauer has done a great job of going from a recipes site to a lifestyle blog adapting to the demands of social media and her followers.

Listening to her blog is great fun and I highly recommend her if you’re interested in health, food, and exercise. πŸ˜€

21day

_The 21-day Sugar Detox:  Bust Sugar & Carb Cravings Naturally_ by Diane Sanfilippo

At the end of September (yes it has been a while) a friend asked if I wanted to join her in doing a 21-day sugar detox. I had been thinking about it for a while – since going Paleo – but had never really pushed myself into it. This was a good chance to do so. She recommended this book to use for recipes, etc.

It is a good book to start with as it explains what sugar does to the body and provides a lot of recipes to use throughout the 21-days including different levels depending on your purpose and metabolism or exercise patterns. Although it was nearly impossible to cut out alcohol, I did try to stick to less sugary ones such as tequila (yay!) as much as possible. Some days I had to cheat as it is hard to change a diet when your partner is a bit resistant to it. πŸ˜›

Still, I learned quite a bit from this and the book. There is also a Facebook page and website to help those who want a community in the struggle to remove one of the most harmful and addictive substances there is out there – and it is part of our daily lives!!!!

So, I recommend everyone try to remove as much sugar from your diet – that means breads/carbs as well – and see how your body can change. πŸ˜€

Day 6:  What in nature are you grateful for?

Hm…this is a difficult one…. When I was a younger adult, I used to take a lot of walks in the parks (in Japan mostly) and tried to be more in touch with nature. As a child, I was mostly allergic to everything outside on the farm, so I developed a bit of a love-hate relationship to nature. Since moving to the desert, I hardly consider nature at all and, in fact, when I return to ‘natural’ places, I end up feeling sick again like when I was a child. Thus, it is difficult to consider this. For some reason, when I think about nature, I think woods, trees, flowers and the like. I generally do not conjure up the sea and beach. However, if I acknowledge the sea as nature (of course it is!), then I am most grateful for the ocean and beaches. I am not allergic to either of them! πŸ˜›

The ocean and sea has always made me feel small in the amazing power and awesomeness of the water. While I have always held a fear of drowning and do not like to consider the life that exists below, I still feel inspired by the ocean. The waves crashing onto the sand provides me with awe and peace at the same time. I truly feel the strength and beauty of the earth and its creator when I stand at the edge of the water or float in its powerful rolling waves. So, yes, I am grateful for the ocean/sea.

This weekend was a friend’s birthday party in Al Ain. I wanted to do something nice other than just show up and crash at her house. So, I offered to bake a birthday cake as it has been a while since I have done some baking. Since she is also doing a Paleo way of life, I found a few recipes that looked promising.

If you want the recipes, check my pins on Pinterest.

The last pic was of the trial cake. R asked for a special one for us at home and it was a good opportunity to test it out before serving it to people. In the end, it was delicious. The coconut flour gave it a coconut flavor and aside from icing sugar, there was no other sugar used, instead it was maple syrup and honey. So, it seemed to be a huge hit and I will probably use it again for future sweet-tooth satisfying endeavors. πŸ˜€

I have been having some stomach problems for a while now and initially, it was due to the H Pylori bacteria. I tested highly positive back before summer began and did a round of treatments. When I went back just before the summer, the test came back negative, which shocked me. I did not really worry about it until I got back from summer break. My stomach was acting up and the same symptoms had arisen, so I went back for another test. The test again came back negative. I still am not convinced.

However, as I started to consider my symptoms, one major difference in others whom I know have it, is weight loss from a lack of appetite due to bloating. I have not had this. In fact, if anything I am going the other direction! So, I started to research other possibilities which include: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fructose malabsorption, gastritis, and more. Of all of these options, the fructose malabsorption symptoms and diagnosis seems to fit the best considering that I was drinking a lot of fruit juice whilst in Thailand, which I normally do not do.

With this realization, I also decided to do a bit of a change in my eating. A friend at work has been on the Paleo diet for some time and is really into it. I was not so sure it was something that I could do, but of all the diets out there, it seems like one that might actually suit me. It requires taking out grains, legumes, dairy, most sugars and ingredients with preservatives. Not so bad, right? It is called the ‘caveman‘ diet since the concept is that we should eat as the cavemen did since that is how our bodies were originally built. However, some argue that our bodies have evolved to be able to digest most of what we eat now. Still, I would argue that is not necessarily true given an increase in obesity, diabetes, and all these digestive issues.

So, since I’m already lactose intolerant it is not too difficult to get rid of dairy. Though, I do occasionally want my cheese, ice cream and yogurt, I think I can slowly move away from them and just slip now and then. πŸ˜‰ As far as grains go, I do not like bread or rice that much to begin with, so I feel okay. I did not realize that having granola in my smoothie counted though, thus, I have now removed that. One problem is pasta. Although I have not wanted to have it recently, I am not sure I will hold on to that forever. The biggest problem is peanuts and peanut butter. This is one of my greatest pleasures and I am not sure I can completely remove it or ever will. As much as I love cheese, I will trade cheese for peanut butter! πŸ˜€ The other things are already not really a part of my usual eating anyway – using olive oil only and such.

Of course, like any diet, you can adjust here and there. So, if I have some of the things that aren’t considered Paleo, it’s not like I will die! It’s just a really nice reference and one that I can manage since it does not cut out meat! It might take a while to fully go Paleo, but in the meantime I am hoping that my stomach and body will feel better.
