As part of my yoga teacher training it has been extremely important to build my own practice at home to ensure that I do poses and breathing as I learn in training. However, sometimes I lack motivation on my own or I find it challenging to set aside enough time each day to practice at home.

For some reason, I have no problem setting aside time to go to a yoga class at the Bodytree Studio throughout the week. What I find interesting about this is that often I hear people mention how difficult they find it to start attending a yoga class for the first time because people are not usually very social in a yoga class. Thus, new attendees may feel intimidated, especially if they think their level of yoga is “not that good”.

This is interesting on many levels. First, yes, it is indeed true that most yogis tend to keep to themselves in a yoga class. Not because they are unfriendly, but because by the very nature and philosophy of yoga, it is an introspective activity. The whole point of doing yoga is to lose the ego and sense of self. When we hold poses, we are about pushing ourselves to new limits, not really about comparing ourselves to others in the class – though this does happen. So, it is easy to see how it might look intimidating to someone just starting or trying to make friends through a studio class.

Also, let me highlight again that yoga is not about comparing our ability to do poses with others. However, inevitably, a new attendee or even beginner to yoga will feel self-conscious about his/her skill at holding particular poses. In a mixed level class it can often feel as if no one is actually a beginner, but the truth is that everyone is always a beginner no matter how long one has been practicing yoga. It is a practice and each day is a new day. Therefore, there should be no comparisons that someone seems more flexible or more advanced than someone else. It is our egos that get in the way of this and create a sense of isolation in a class.

Finally, I would like to remind us of the meaning of yoga. It is union. Union with others humans, union with the world around us from the animals, plants, earth, universe and union within ourselves from our bodies and our minds. It is for this reason that I prefer to do yoga in a class than at home. It is a feeling of union with others. Although we may create a sense of solitude in our yoga practice – even in a class – there is unity in the flow of practice that we do together as one human race spreading peace and love to the world.

Ten months ago when I decided to embark on my yoga teacher training journey – on a day when I had taken a day off work because I needed a ‘mental health day’ to escape the dread of going to work each day – I had no idea how I was going to make a retreat to Bali work as part of the course. However, I knew that something would work out and went for it.

Nine months later, having quit my job thus freeing me from any other obstacles to heading to our yoga retreat, I was on a plane to a place that goes beyond expectations.

In 2011, (almost five years ago to he day) I spent about 20 days in Bali’s southern area, Kuta, which is tailored towards tourists. The time then was different in terms of why I was there, who I was with and my stage of life. This time, I was in Ubud, which is well-known as being more traditional and a yoga-center.

Although I did not have that much time to be ‘touristy’ on this trip, I have to say it was one of the most fun and rewarding experiences I have had. Getting to know my yogi compatriots more was a major highlight along with finding my gem of accommodations at the Manada Guesthouse.

The yoga itself was a common thread for us, but not necessarily the central aspect of the retreat. How can this be, you ask, wasn’t it a yoga retreat after all?

Yes, it was. We did do a lot of yoga, teaching and learning of anatomy. However, each individual person there grew whether it was physically, mentally or emotionally. This growth occurred within the person, but because of the unity of the group. We discovered things we liked about each other, things we didn’t like about each other and overall how to accept each person just as they were despite likes or dislikes.

So, it was indeed a beautiful and excellent time away. It was also a good break away from the summer stresses and a chance to take a bit of a breath from reality. 😛

Why I have not written about such a big part of my life sooner, I am not sure; but it is appropriate for me to now write a bit about yoga.

Yoga has become massively popular recently and is growing in its trend around the world. While I sense that it may become saturated like many things do when the masses decide they want to jump on the bandwagon and ’embrace’ it to the point of becoming a yoga instructor or labeling themselves a yogi, I want to be clear that this is NOT the case with me. Perhaps this is even part of the reason why I have not written about it sooner.

Union or yoke is the meaning of yoga. Union and yoke with the world, others, the universe, the self (conscious and subconscious). Yoga is not just a fitness activity – though some use it for such. Yoga is a way of life and a pathway to letting go of the self (ego). The benefits of yoga are health, flexibility, calm, compassion and peace in believing we are all where we should and need to be in this moment.

When I see posts or videos of bikini yoginis (female practitioners) or flexible yogis (male practitioners), I am actually put off by the yoga movement. This is NOT what yoga is about. Those who study yoga philosophy and practice with true focus do not wish to show the world what one is capable of – for that is the ego showing off – defeats the number one belief of yoga:  to let go of the self.

On the other hand, I am in some ways joining the market saturation as this is my new business. I am becoming a yoga instructor, life coach and wellness trainer. Although I may need to post some pictures of poses or write some posts on my business site about these topics, it is definitely not to show off. My Instagram account will not be filled with me doing all the crazy advanced poses possible (by the way, I am not there yet anyway!), but rather with basic poses and tips to encourage people to embrace the way of life so that the world is spread with more compassion, peace and contentment starting with the individual.

Soon I will share my business site here as well, but until then remember not to get sucked in to all this yoga hype! Find out for yourself what it really means and then give it a try for at least 3 months to see what it can do for your own health and well-being.

Sunshine & lightness!

Day 11:  What holiday are you grateful for?

These are good general questions leaving room for interpretations. Holiday can mean an official one or ‘school’ ones, right (i.e. spring break, summer, etc.)? I am going to go with an American official holiday called Thanksgiving. After all, I am American, right?! Besides, we are not the only country with a Thanksgiving (Canada). While we could argue over the origins of the holiday and discuss the dirty politics of how it ever came to be – again, let us just skip over that to the happy thoughts! 😀

Having been away from my family on this holiday for so many years I cannot really count, I always make a point of celebrating Thanksgiving proper American-style each year. One reason for this is to give thanks to those in my life who become my family abroad. Since many, or shall I say most, of my friends are not American, it is also a chance for me to share a piece of my culture. Thanksgiving in my house has always been a close family affair. I have enjoyed it more than Christmas! I mean, who wouldn’t want to eat over getting gifts??? 😛 So, it is even fitting to say I am grateful for Thanksgiving as a holiday….

This weekend was my eighth yoga weekend for my 300hr teacher training course. It was our last before our week-long retreat held in Bali in August; and then after that, we only have two more weekends before our evaluation weekend for certification! The time is really flying by.

My introverted nature dreads each of the weekends in having to make the 1.5 hour drive to Dubai, socialize all day whilst doing yoga, then drive 1.5 hours back and repeat for three days in a row. However, once I arrive and see the friends I have made, all that dread just washes away. One of my yogamates commented this weekend that she was glad to spend time with me outside of our training times (ie. during lunch) because she found that I do smile and laugh a lot, but I am always so stern and serious in class. This made me laugh because I know it is true. When I am being studious, I am very serious. Outside of that? Well, I think I’m fairly easygoing – though my husband might not agree! 😛

This weekend was a short two-day instead of the usual three-day, which was kind of nice as the focus was on relaxation for most of the weekend. We took some turns teaching to each other, aligning and assessing alignment for our future private lessons.

In the afternoon of the first day, we had a lesson on the Hindu gods and where some of the names of the poses came from. It was really fascinating to hear the stories as there is a lot of overlap with Asian mythologies, Western religions and cultures around the world. I realized I love these stories so much and the application to the poses is what makes it even more fun!

On our second afternoon, a beautiful soul named Zarine came to do a Gong Bath Meditation with us, which was absolutely amazing.

Using these bowls and instruments, Zarine took us on a guided meditation known as Gong Bath (bathed in the sounds of the gongs / bowls / chimes / etc.). It is based on the idea that life originated with sound and every vibration has an effect on our bodies, so using sounds we can heal our bodies. I am not quite sure about all of that or how it might actually work, but it is interesting nevertheless. The sounds that were created were absolutely beautiful.

The mediation itself was also quite powerful and revealing to each individual. I have become a very serious fan of meditation and its powers in calming the mind, changing our way of thinking and even bringing about our desires. Much like a prayer to the Lord can be answered, so can the visualizations of a meditative experience.

So, much was revealed to me yesterday; thus, it is time for me to start taking some actions towards manifesting it all!
