I may have left it too long for my memory to recall our/my latest trip to New York City. It was nearly a month ago now and it seems that despite my promises to update about the trip, I have only just now remembered. Guess that’s part of the brain fog era of life that I am in. Anyway, let me see what I recall.

First, the main reason for going was to attend a book writing retreat with the company I do some editing work for. Initially, I was going to teach a full session, but as it was my first time to meet everyone on the team and see what the work would require, I decided to just attend as a participant so I could get a sense of everyone first. This turned out to be a good idea.

When I decided that I was going, my mom and I thought it would be fun to combine a short mother-daughter trip to the City. So, we got to work on finding out what shows were on and getting our tickets.

We saw three shows: Oh Mary!, Six – the musical, and YellowFace. It was a mix of show types, and Oh Mary! was definitely my favorite. I enjoyed the others, but they just weren’t as entertaining.

During the days, we did a lot of walking in different areas of the city, taking in sights and enjoying some of the eats on offer. Although Mom probably would have liked to see more museum exhibits, we didn’t go to any…. Still, it was a good time.

Since M decided he didn’t want to spend time apart a few months ago, he joined the trip on the day that Mom went back home. He had to entertain himself for three of the days, but he seemed to have survived.

The retreat was good, interesting, and motivational in seeing how the company works, learning about people’s ideas for books, and reminding me why I love reading, writing, and editing. I’m amazed at how just saying YES got me there.

So, that is what the NYC trip entailed. Overall, I was reminded of my love of the crazy city that is truly an entity of its own. Despite the increased level of noise and scent of MaryJ everywhere, I fell into a comfortable groove walking around, interacting with Americans/New Yorkers, and just being a part of the pulse of the city. I had missed it, to be honest.

Hopefully, it won’t be another ten years before I return again. Next time, I’d like to see more shows and eat even more food! Haha!

The final part of my summer brought me back full circle to New York City. Wanting a bit of a touristy experience in the City, I decided to get a hotel in the midtown area instead of troubling friends to stay with them. Also, I was still wanting to mentally refresh, so it was a good way to go.

Sadly, most of my friends from the City have moved away, but I was still able to visit with a few friends while I was there. Also, I finally made it up to The Cloisters – a part of the Metropolitan Museum. It was absolutely beautiful and it’s a shame I never made it up there before. The old building and the artwork was lovely to see. Mostly the grounds and view of the river made the visit more peaceful.

Most of my days were spent in Central Park hanging out. However, I did spend a couple of boring periods in the Teachers College library trying to do some research for my dissertation proposal. I had to take advantage of the opportunity, after all! Plus, it was a nice reminder of what it feels like to be in an academic environment and just how much I truly loved my TC experience. So, it served to motivate me again to get to studying. 🙂

Also, as I always try to do when I’m in the City, I went to see a show. This time, I went to see “In the Heights”, which was absolutely wonderful. It made me laugh and cry. Though I would have liked to have seen a proper play, there was nothing I wanted to spend money on, and I’m really glad I got to see the musical instead. It’s going on tour and will be in Portland in October, so everyone should go see it (I think)!

So, my summer holidays are now at an end as are my updates on the traveling. Coming up will be some book reviews as I was a busy reading machine this summer – not the academic readings I should have been doing, but OH WELL! 😛

Pics next.

More to come,

I arrived in the City on Friday after a 15 hour direct flight to Atlanta and then a short flight to JFK.

Since arriving I have gotten my hair cut and highlighted, had dinner with a friend from grad school, spent the day with another friend from grad school by having lunch, getting soaked by Hannah, going to MoMa, then went out with more friends in the evening, fallen asleep in a cab, gotten lost in Soho, had brunch with the same group of friends, walked around the village and Soho, saw a play at half price, watched the women’s finals of the US Open on Tv and figured out how to post on blogger from my iPhone.

So, you could say I have been busy! I still have a day left as well.

I miss this place. I feel like I can be me here and no one will judge me except if I don’t loudly claim to be and agree with all things Democrat! It is a place full of passion, culture, diversity, love, fashion, poor and rich, green and buildings, old and new – basically everything! I need to come back but we shall see where life takes me.
