I’ve been in the marvelously cooler UK for the past five days. So much of my mental state has shifted in this time, just by being in the lower temperatures.

What was I doing in the UK you ask? Where did I go, you want to know?

Let me sum up, then.

I went to Reading, pronounced [redding] not [reeding]. It was a kind of ‘bucket list’ visit since I have memories of playing Monopoly and getting the chance-card that would say something like “Take a ride on the Reading Railroad, collect 200 if you pass go.” So, it made me smile to pass the railroad station and I actually rode the train from the station.

My purpose was to learn a bit about trading based on AI trading algorithms. I have actually been manually trading for ‘fun’ for a few months and wanted to know about how it all works. Mission accomplished. I’m not quite sure what I will do with the knowledge now, but at least I have a bit more info.

After that, I went to Bristol to visit a friend. It is just under an hour away on the train, so it would have been a shame to not make the visit. We had such a nice time exploring the area and catching up.

In addition to all of this was my refreshed mind in not feeling overheated all the time, sweating out of every orifice unnaturally, and hiding in dark rooms as an attempt to stay cool. So, while I am not super excited about returning to the heat, I am looking forward to going home to see my man, the pups and cats, and see what progress has been done on our pool area.

Sometimes, a little break gives a positive perspective on all that we have.

Oh it seems ages ago that I was leaving for the UK to do some work training as the start of my summer holidays…. It will be nice to reminisce as I update here on my last eight weeks! 😛

I may or may not have written before that I am trained as an Apple Education Trainer (AET) formally known as an Apple Professional Developer (APD). While this does not mean that I work for Apple – I wish – it does mean that I can train others on how to use Apple/Mac programs and devices on their behalf, but NOT as an official employee. If that sounds convoluted – it is. Basically, I have the authorization to train on Apple’s behalf, but not the certification to make it official. Also, I am currently authorized through the university where I work, but not as an individual – meaning if I leave the university and join one that does not have authorization with Apple, I no longer have said authorization to do any training even though all the knowledge is still in my head…. Yep, clear as mud!

So, on occasion, Apple sponsors training on programs, updates or pedagogy for their education branch. There are times when an AET or AETs will be sponsored and invited to attend these special training sessions. One came up to attend one at Apple’s London headquarters looking at Challenge-based Learning with the affordances of the Mac ecosystem.

Since they were willing to subsidize one night stay at a hotel and it was just the beginning of my holidays, I got permission to go away early and attend.

It was a very interesting day and it was nice to visit London again. I got a different feel for it this second time around and though it’s still not NYC, I think I liked it better.

With that last bit of business out of the way, it was time to begin my European tour!

More to come,

On our second day, we decided to do the Big Bus Tour so that we could see the city and get our bearings.

We started out on the Red Line, but that line offers a live commentary on the city and my mom had a bit of trouble with the accents. So, we switched to the Blue Line, which has the recorded commentary. 😉 Although it is a hop-on hop-off tour, we just stayed on for the full loop, which was about 3.5 hours. Mom was a bit jet lagged, and it was easy to get the full picture.

Our Bus Tour ticket included a river boat cruise, so we went back in the evening and cruised the river Thames where we also got to see the Tower Bridge in full. It was a full and tiring day, but all good!

**I am going to try on the weekends to update on my summer travels – until the last chapter is submitted. So, here we go!**

The beginning of my summer holidays started with some drama from work as I had to miss the last two official days due to my second-to-last coaching course and then I flew early to meet my mom in the UK for our mother-daughter trip. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but as fate would have it, the students had to cause some trouble at the last minute…. Anyway, with that, I flew away to leave all thoughts of the desert behind me!

Throughout all of my travels I have always avoided having to go through Heathrow as people have always said it is a terrible airport. Although I couldn’t imagine it was all that bad, this was my first time there; and, well, now I fully understand.

Upon arrival, I was completely amazed at the disorder at the luggage belt. People stood right up along the belt and would not get out of the way when my suitcase came by.

Initial impression was not good...Everybody was hoarding around the baggage belt - couldn't grab my suitcase because nobody would move!!!!

So, my first impression of Londoners was not great.

Luckily, I was able to find my mom quite easily and we got ourselves on the train and to our hotel without too much trouble. It was not great to lug our suitcases in the Tube, but I suppose it could have been worse and some people did help, which lightened my initial impression of people. 😉

In the evening, upon recommendation from M, we ventured out to the West End for dinner. We found a really nice Naplese restaurant and had a delicious dinner.

We explored the area a bit and did a fairly epic walk around for our first afternoon/night. We were off to a good start!!!
